Norway Travel Advice

Climate & Weather

Although Norway is a famous gateway to the Arctic Circle, the country’s climate is much milder compared to other parts of the world located in the far north. Norway’s coastal areas typically experience mild and wet winters and dry, balmy summers. Meanwhile, the northernmost regions of Norway have very heavy snow during the winter. In the summer, the weather is typically mild and dry.

Norway’s hottest months are July and August, with temperatures averaging around 20 to 25℃. January is typically the coldest month, and can frequently dip below 0℃.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit on our trips to Norway comes down to preference. Winter (November to February) is the most popular season, as travellers are drawn to the snowy wonderland scenery, plus the Northern Lights are highly likely to make an appearance depending on where you are in the country.

Summer (June to August) is also popular due to a natural phenomenon called the Midnight Sun, where the sun remains visible even at midnight. For cool summer getaways and hiking, this is a perfect time of year. For budget travel, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) are favourable.

Customs & Culture

Norwegian culture is relaxed and welcoming, with similar customs and attitudes to the UK. There is a big emphasis on enjoying the outdoors in Norway. This is called “Friluftsliv,” translating to “open-air living.” It’s easy to see why; Norway is famous for its natural beauty, from its fjords to scenic train and car journeys.

On our trips to Norway, your trip leader can help advise you regarding cultural customs.
