Group travellers running from dinosaur toy in bolivia salt flat

Salar de Uyuni

Salar de Uyuni needs to be on your South America bucket list. This is the biggest salt flat on the planet, and it’s about to take you on the most magical adventure of your life. Picture nothing but bright blue skies and shimmering white terrain for miles. During the dry season, the ground transforms into a mirror-like reflection.

La Paz

La Paz is Bolivia’s famous sky-high capital, but there’s more to this city than breaking altitude records. Dig deeper into Bolivia’s rich local cultures, as you hop between boho neighbourhood quarters, home to boutique shops, art galleries and cafés. Who could forget about the iconic Witches’ Market?

View of Sucre Bolivia Buildings

Sucre

Sucre is impossibly stunning. Sunset-coloured rooftops meet whitewashed architecture against a backdrop of mountains, inviting you to get closer and explore. Beyond the cobblestone streets and colourful local markets, Sucre knows how to surprise its visitors, like… Dinosaur tracks right outside the city?

Potosí Mountain and village in Bolivia

Potosí

Potosí may be one of Bolivia’s best-kept secret destinations today, but you’re looking at what was one of the wealthiest cities in the Americas centuries ago. So the story goes, a herder journeyed into Cerro Rico in search of a missing llama, only to accidentally discover silver. You can discover more of its history on our Bolivia trips.

Climate & Weather

Bolivia’s climate is hugely varied, ranging from Andes mountain peaks to the tropical Amazon Rainforest, encompassing much of the country. Bolivia is famous for its high altitudes; one of its capitals, La Paz, breaks records as the world’s highest capital!

Because of its terrain, Bolivia’s average temperatures can look completely different depending on where you are in the country. Whilst June and July can be sunny and dry, this is when the Andes are at their coldest, as nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing. December and January are generally the warmest months in Bolivia.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit on our Bolivia trips comes down to preference. Bolivia’s dry season lasts from May to October, and this period is particularly popular for hiking and outdoor activities due to the clear skies. Meanwhile, Bolivia’s wet season, falling from December to March, is when you can see mirror-like reflections in the famous Salar de Uyuni (Bolivian Salt Flats).

Bolivia celebrates several festivals throughout the year. These include Alasitas in January, Carnival in February, Easter in March or April, and Day of the Dead in November.

Customs & Culture

Bolivian culture is one of the best parts of visiting. The communities are just as diverse as the scenery in Bolivia, as Andean, Indigenous and Spanish influences have come together to create a country that feels unique.

A little bit of Spanish goes a long way here. Punctuality is generally relaxed. Dressing conservatively is generally encouraged, particularly whilst visiting sacred or religious sites, or in rural areas. Your trip leader on our Bolivia tours is also there to provide guidance.

Red and blue british passports

Passports & Visas

Entry requirements and visa regulations are different for every destination and your purpose of travel. We recommend staying updated on the latest official information before you go travelling. Your passport should be undamaged and have enough blank pages for stamps and visas. Many countries require your passport to have at least 6 months of validity beyond the date of entry.

For more information and resources regarding entry requirements, check out our Visa Advice page.
